Sophie Larrimore USA, b. 1980

Biography

Sophie Larrimore (b. 1980, Maryland) is an artist based in Brooklyn, New York, whose work explores the dynamic relationships between composition, color, form, and texture. A graduate of The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in 2004, Larrimore’s paintings, particularly of canine and human subjects, are notable for their playful yet intricate treatment of space and form. Through her work, she examines the tension between flat and illusionistic spaces, often using her subjects as a starting point for broader explorations of artistic elements.

Larrimore’s fascination with dogs as subjects stems from both their kitsch connotations and their historical roles in art, often relegated to secondary figures. Her use of these animals is a reflection on the intersection of nostalgia, humor, and critique of artistic seriousness. In her work, Larrimore intentionally challenges the traditional boundaries between “serious” art and seemingly trivial subjects, using the dogs as a way to explore the relationship between abstraction and representation. Her paintings play with form and color in intuitive ways, creating a sense of movement and surprise for both the artist and the viewer.

Larrimore received a B.F.A. from The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, New York, in 2004. Recent solo exhibitions include “Tell Me When We See Each Other Again” at cadet capela, Paris, France (2024); “Cloisters and Oysters” at Venus Over Manhattan, New York, NY (2023); “Please Proceed” at The Pit, Los Angeles, CA (2022); “Desire Path” at Kate Werble Gallery, New York, NY (2021); and “Other Matters” at Situations, New York, NY (2021). Additionally, she has participated in group exhibitions at Tops Gallery, Memphis, TN; Kate Werble Gallery, New York, NY; Harper’s, East Hampton, NY; Jack Hanley Gallery, New York, NY. Larrimore has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the Rema Hort Mann Foundation’s Emerging Artist Grant in 2019. Her work has been covered in prestigious magazines such as The New York Times and Artsy.
