Erlend Grytbakk Wolds paintings show the very moment where we don’t see clearly, the place between seeing and understanding, and ask us to think about what this experience entails. Painting with watercolor on unprimed linen, with red, yellow and blue - the primary colors that became emblematic for modernism and the Neoplasticism’s ideology for harmony and order - spray painted in innumerable alternate layers on the canvas. The method creates a surface that at first glance appears almost brownish, with lines and fields of foggy shadows. Inviting you to spend time in their company, colors and shapes emerge from or fading into the surface of the canvas.

The same attitude is apparent in his sculptural practice, where references to classic modernist furniture design and postminimalism meet. Though their size and shape might feel familiar, unlike a piece of furniture, which is created to support your body in some way, the sculptures turn you down. Not there for you, they are there for themselves, in their own right. In combination with the paintings they stage a scene, inhabiting an evoked interior of some swanky apartment or townhouse.

Erlend Grytbakk Wold (b. 1986, Trondheim), lives and works in Oslo. He has an BFA from Oslo Academy of the Arts and an MFA from Malmö Art Academy, Sweden. Previous solo exhibitions include Until the Light Takes Us, Kunstnerforbundet, Oslo (2018), Till the Last Light Fades, Trøndelag Senter for Samtidskunst, Trondheim (2017), Remain in Light, LNM, Oslo (2016), and Secondhand Daylight at BLOKK, Bergen (2015). Selected group exhibitions include Between a rock and a hard place, Barbé-Urbain Gallery, Ghent (2018), LNM 50 Year Anniversary Exhibition, Kunstnernes Hus, Oslo (2018), Gruppeutstilling Jóhan Martin Christiansen, Jesper Veileby, Erlend Grytbakk Wold, Galleri Arnstedt, Båstad (2015) and Høstutstillingen, Oslo (2013).
