Laffy Taffy: Charlie Roberts
Rod Bianco is proud to present Laffy Taffy by Charlie Roberts. In this exhibition the artist will present a series of paintings on paper, as well as a collection of ceramic sculptures. This will be his first solo show at the gallery. Charlie Roberts wide-ranging practice encompasses paintings as well as pained sculptures made from both clay and tree chuncks. His work borrow from art-historical and pop cultural sources. The contents of his cramped paintings are stacked one above the other, showing different views simultaneously.
Roberts is fearless in his approach to subject, style and technique. The result becomes full of energy, determination and a unique expression which draws on the illusion of the good life. The bluntly stylized figuration suggest an affinity with Christop Ruckhäberle and the artist associated with Lubok Verlag, and his work show a similar fascination with folk art, popular graphics and hip-hop culture with Roberts recognizable beautiful young sporty women. The subject matter, utterly contemporary, banal and everyday is at odds with the delicacy of the medium they are made in.
